Always exploring and learning, I wanted to get hands-on with Blend Shapes from real 3D scans. This time, I set out to go from zero to fully functional expressions using real scan data.
I followed Derrick Sesson’s class at Gnomon Workshop for the technical foundation and used scans from 3D Scan Store. Then it was all about cleaning, modeling, and experimenting to understand deltas and expression flow better.
The main steps I tackled:
Topology Transfer: Wrapped the scan data onto a clean, animation-friendly topology with R3DS Wrap.
Expression Modeling: Cleaned up the scans in ZBrush, built the Blend Shapes, and separated expressions so they could combine smoothly.
Expression Refinement in Maya: Combined expressions, polished deltas, and made sure everything transitions naturally.
Softwares used:
R3DS Wrap – Topology transfer
ZBrush – Scan clean-up and expression modeling
Maya – Blend Shape setup and UVs
Photoshop – Texture refinements
So far it’s been a ton of fun experimenting and really understanding how facial expressions work in 3D. Can’t wait to keep building more shapes and refining the workflow lots more learning ahead!
